Hydraulic cylinders are made use of to perform work myriad applications and situations every day. Whether it’s a utility vehicle fixing an electrical issue, a plow truck clearing the road or a compactor at any local recycling center, hydraulic cylinders are found in motion everywhere. When it comes to these cylinders, there is a lot more than what meets the eye. In order to keep the pressurized fluids in the cylinder system in check and to keep it in motion, a complicated configuration of high-performing seals in 3 basic categories are needed:
Here, take a look below for a detailed explanation of each type of seals.
1. Static seals:
When pressurized, these seals are not subject to any kind of movement. This includes D-rings, O-rings, back-up rings, gaskets and cover seals. O-rings are one of the common examples of static seals, and they are extremely versatile and available in varied sizes. The O-ring helps to create a physical barrier between the casing and the housing when it is placed into the cylinder housing the squeezed by the casing. It is commonly used with back-up rings. O-rings in fluoro rubber, nitrile rubber and ethylene propylene diene are perfect for use in various water, mineral oils and water-based fluids and air.
2. Dynamic seals:
When pressurized, dynamic seals are subject to radial or axial movement. Rod seals, piston seals, wipers, rotating seals and oil seals are different types of dynamic seals. Piston seals help in the prevention of pressurized fluid leakage across the piston when the pressure of the system pushes the rod assembly and the piston down the cylinder bore. The pressure in the cylinder is held by rod seals that prevent fluid from leaking out. Wipers or scrapers help to prevent contamination like, dust, moisture and dirt from entering the cylinder as they retract into the system.
3. Guide Ring:
Guide tape, resin-bonded fabric and engineered plastics guide the piston in the cylinder bore and the rod found in the cylinder head of a hydraulic cylinder. The guide rings are made use of in the prevention of damage from side loading as metallic contact is prevented between the rotational and axial components.
